"Take it easier during smoky times to reduce how much smoke you inhale. If it looks or smells smoky outside, avoid strenuous activities such as mowing the lawn or going for a run," the guide adds. "Smoke levels can change a lot during the day, so wait until air quality is better before you are active outdoors." It is now commonplace for me to overhear perfectly sane adults talking about a beloved child and their daily ups and downs only to find out they are, in fact, talking about their pooch. “I’m ready to go home now,” I overheard an American woman tell her friend recently at a resort on a beautiful Austrian lake. “I miss my dog so much.” Right then. But with this bizarre displacement of human attachments – perhaps understandable in a hopelessly confusing, alienating age – onto four-legged creatures, a terrible mixture of fetishism on one hand and anthropomorphism on the other has taken hold. And, as was inevitable, it has produced monsters. Behold the creation, apparently through genetic enhancement, of the breed known as the Bully XL – made in America where else?. Quite why anyone would want a dog with a name like that is beyond me. It seems to speak to a creeping admiration for violence and vulgar shows of power. And the Bully XL’s victims have paid an awful price. The brutes have reportedly been involved in the majority of fatal dog attacks in the UK since 2021. They are, in the words of Stan Rawlinson, a dog behaviourist, “very, very reactive”. Rawlinson warned that they will savage more and more people as time goes on, and that they could kill you in under a minute. It’s fine to have a pet and love it. It’s also good to be kind to animals. But our obsession goes way beyond that. We are now flaunting the hideous haunches and drooling mouth of the grotesque Bully – and I can’t help but wonder if some people are too dimwitted to differentiate between the trend for big muscles in men and what they want, or should have, in a dog. We can only hope that this foolish obsession ends before more lives are lost.
